Eye Exam at our Pediatric Eye Doctor Broad Ripple Office

According to the American Optometric Association (AOA), infants should have their first eye exam at the age of 6 months, then it is recommended at the age of 3, then right around the time your child begins school, which would be about the age of 6 years. The AOA recommends an exam every two years, once your child reaches first grade, if they are not are experiencing any issues. If your child has eyeglasses or contact lenses, our pediatric eye doctor recommends an exam every year.

It is important for your child’s overall health and also their learning skills in the classroom to have an exam. Poor eye sight contributes to a multitude of learning problems, therefore it is important to have your child’s eyes checked at our Pediatric Eye Doctor Broad Ripple facility.

Our comprehensive exams include standard refraction and a retinal screening. Our pediatric exams will detect any vision problems and also any eye diseases that your child may be experiencing. Our exams take about an hour and a half, where our optometrist will go over your child’s medical history and perform a comprehensive exam.

Common Eye Conditions diagnosed at our Pediatric Eye Doctor Broad Ripple Facility

Amblyopia
This is usually diagnosed in early childhood and describes poor vision in an eye that has not developed normal sight. This condition is also known as “lazy eye” It occurs when your vision is better in one eye then the other.

Ptosis
This condition involves a drooping upper eyelid that covers the eye entirely or slightly. This blocks you from having clear vision.

“Cloudy” eyes
The surface of the eye appears cloudy, instead of clear. Your child may have a cataract or eye disorder that needs attention.

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis refers to either a viral or bacterial infection or an allergic reaction. Pink eye can be very contagious and should be treated fairly quickly.

Stye
A stye is a sore usually located near the edge of the eyelid. It is red and can swell up. This can be very irritating and can burn or itch. The cause is an infected eyelash follicle.

Blocked Tear Duct
This condition occurs when the eye’s drainage system for tears is either partially or completely blocked. Since the tears cannot drain, this will cause irritation and watery eyes.

Farsightedness

This is a common condition in which you can see distant objects clearly, but objects nearby may be blurry.

Nearsightedness

Another common condition in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away may be blurry.
