Technology and Eyesight

The average American spends about nine hours a day in front of a screen. That’s almost half the day spent in front of a computer, TV, tablet, or phone. Sounds about right, doesn’t it? But what does this increased screen time (time spent in front of a screen) doing to your vision? Those headaches you get after work may not just be from the stressful day. You may be overworking your eyes and may be at risk for something called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS). If you’re experiencing frequent headaches at work, then visit Anderson Eye Doctor Dr. Amy Walden & Associates for an eye exam.

What Is CVS?

Computer Vision Syndrome describes a group of eye and vision-related problems that result from prolonged computer use. Many individuals experience eye discomfort and vision problems when viewing a computer screen for extended periods. The level of discomfort appears to increase with the amount of computer use (American Optometric Association).

Symptoms of CVS:

  • Eye Strain
  • Dry Eyes
  • Burning and Itching
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Blurry Vision
  • Neck Pain

Thankfully, CVS is treated by managing the symptoms. Our Anderson Eye Doctor recommends these tips to reduce the amount of strain extended screen time put on your eyes.

Tips to relieve CVS Symptoms:

  • Blinking– Make an effort to blink frequently to keep the surface of your eye moist.
  • Breaks– Give your eyes rest for 15 minutes for every two hours of continuous screen time
  • Lighting– Using blinds or drapes on nearby windows will help reduce glare
  • Screen Position–  The most natural position is to look down at a screen, so ideally, the screen should be 15 to 20 degrees below eye level
  • Anti – Reflective Lens Coating – Glasses with an anti-reflective lens coating will reduce glare off the screen.

In this world where the use of technology is a necessity, it’s impossible to avoid extended periods of screen time. But, by following these tips and taking care of your eyes you can reduce the amount of strain they endure each day.
